A review of Complete Breakfast
by Diego Kontarovsky

Complete Breakfast is a brief look into the life of a young man (Alejandro Kontarovsky) whose breakfast routine is unceremoniously interrupted by a company screw-up. As it were.

This movie combines the three great loves of James and Robert's life: Cereal, my little brother, and the classic Dastoli Digital universe. I've sort of had my head buried in character motivations and hidden meanings while reviewing these last 20 movies or so, but coming up for air, I think it's become clear that James and Robert have reached a point here where they can shoot pretty much anything and it looks totally professional. The reveals of the factory (factories... spoiler alert) are simple, but masterful nevertheless. Alejandro's performance is subtle and magnificent, even if he has a little trouble eating from a spoon like a normal person in that last shot of him (chances are he won't ever read this review, but if he does, he's going to be really pissed that I wrote that).

And as their shooting style has evolved, so has their exhaustive attention to detail. This movie is less than 2 minutes long, and the Behind the Scenes clocks in at just over 9. You can even see the fanciful gleam spreading in Robert's eyes when he starts to explain the original misspelling of "Bismarck."

Here is what the Dastolis have to say about Complete Breakfast:

ROBERT:

"One of the things that really stick out in my mind about Complete Breakfast whenever I think about it are the pictures of the clowns that are flanking Alejandro. That was mainly a happy accident. We did dress the set (those clowns aren't always there), but the only reason we put the clowns there was because we didn't really have anything else. I think they stand in for the characters that are not-but should be-on the cereal boxes (because it would have been difficult and time consuming for us to create a cartoon character)."

JAMES:

"I'm just so happy that we got to explain the whole Bismark thing on camera. I love how it ties in, but is not a sequel."

Aha! So it's not a sequel! Halfway through my review of Occupational Hazard, I felt the need to analyze the occurrence of sequels in the Dastoli Digital universe, raising the question of whether or not Complete Breakfast and Automated Assets were in fact quasi-sequels to Amalgamated Screw Co. of Bismark, North Dakota. I suppose all these movies are indirect sequels of themselves, considering James and Robert like to find ways that they can exist in the same universe.

I get the feeling that one day, these are all going to be theme park rides.
