A review of Under the Gun
by Diego Kontarovsky

Under the Gun is a wild action ride starring James Dastoli as Vic Gagne, a mercenary with the ability to outshoot all kinds of armed henchmen. Vic Gagne travels the globe with his team: Ross (Pat DeNicola), Kay (Trine Alimena) and Ryan (Jake Nabel). Together, they pull dangerous jobs for wealthy clients. But this time, they find themselves in a sticky situation when a man named Henderson (Charley Vandergrift) screws them over big time.

Once again, James and Robert present us a movie filled entirely with criminals, but distinguish between the good and the bad. Here, the team of murderous thieves is only doing their job, and the dishonorable double-crosser is the true villain. Henderson just waits for them to upload a file from a high-security building, then sets off an alarm so they get killed, and that way he doesn't have to pay them. But the whole team escapes unharmed, and they are left to decide what to do next. Actually, Vic decides, and the rest of the team just stands around. I wondered, why does Vic get to call all the shots? I guess he's a brilliant tactician. See, they all have their role:

RYAN: Sits in van and punches at keyboard.

KAY: Drives vehicles.

ROSS: Follows Vic and helps him shoot people.

And of course, Vic Gagne is just a superhuman gun for hire. So what is Vic's plan to get his money from Henderson? He doesn't have one. Rather, his plan is to find Henderson at a factory-type facility and set a bomb there, killing Henderson and all his employees. This seems like kind of a crazy thing to do, but no one ever questions Vic, and so he is never forced to explain his reasoning. We as the audience can assume that he is only murdering all these people so that he can tell his next employer, "One time a guy double-crossed me, so I blew up his building and everyone in it," but the chances are equally likely that Vic is just a sociopath who enjoys the visceral taste of vengeance. The only significant obstacle they face is a climactic fistfight with Henderson, which is probably the second-best Dastoli Digital fistfight to date (after the Price/Crimson battle royale in Smiert Spionam).

I should also address how impressive it is that these are high school kids running around blowing up vans and flying CGI helicopters. Under the Gun will always be one of the jewels on the Dastoli Digital crown. Even if Vic Gagne is just a lunatic with a gun.

Here is what the Dastolis have to say about Under the Gun:

ROBERT:

"In the later part of production for Under the Gun, we were looking at the movie and saying that the team should have just been Vic and Kay. This was mainly because Ross doesn't ever seem to do anytyhing, especially in Prague. Also, that would have made Charley Vandergrift's ideas for the ending, in which Kay goes in and gets captured so that Gagne has to save her, work better."

JAMES:

"There's something about the scope of Under the Gun in proportion to the resources that we had that I don't think can ever be matched. When I look back on the fact that we actually pulled off all the things that are in there, I am very proud of it."
